Moving with support under SGB II
Jobcenter and moving costs: approvals, quotes and documents
The Jobcenter may recognise moving costs when the relevant conditions are met. A new home, a moving quote and funding approval are separate steps. Establish responsibility and obtain the required assurances before signing a tenancy, booking a move or relying on reimbursement.

1. Identify the support you are applying for
This guide is for people considering Jobcenter support under SGB II for a private move within Germany. Since 1 July 2026, the benefit is called Grundsicherungsgeld; older documents may still say Bürgergeld. Other benefits, such as support from the Sozialamt or Agentur für Arbeit, need a separate assessment.
Section 22(6) SGB II provides for recognising housing procurement and moving costs with prior assurance, known as Zusicherung. This does not mean every move or company quote will automatically be paid. Ask for the necessity of the move and the specific costs to be assessed. General advice or acceptance of the new rent does not replace this decision.
- Which new accommodation is being considered?
- What costs arise from transport and necessary assistance?
- Do the rent deposit or cooperative shares need a separate application?
- Is there an additional need for initial household furnishings?
2. Separate rent, moving costs, the deposit and furnishings
Assurance about a new home is not an order to a moving company. Support for a deposit is not automatically a non-repayable grant.
If you move into another area of responsibility, more than one authority may be involved. Ask your current and future Jobcenters where to submit each request. Keep reference numbers, contact details and evidence of submission.
| Cost category | Responsible authority or legal basis | Check in advance |
|---|---|---|
| New accommodation and heating | Assurance from the municipal authority responsible for the new accommodation (section 22(4)) | Have the specific property offer and recognised costs checked before signing the tenancy |
| Housing procurement and moving | Prior assurance from the municipal authority responsible locally until the move (section 22(6)) | Which items and scope the decision covers |
| Rent deposit or cooperative shares | Prior assurance at the new location; these costs should normally be provided as a loan (section 22(6)) | Separate application, amount, payment and repayment arrangements |
| Initial furniture or household appliances | Separate need under section 24(3), rather than an automatic result of moving | Apply separately for initial items that are actually needed |
3. Explain the reason for moving and the help you need
Benefit-assessment documents belong with the Jobcenter. A moving enquiry to Umzughilfen needs information about the work; do not attach complete benefit files, bank statements or medical records.
Describe your actual circumstances: why the change of home is needed, by when, and which tasks you can arrange yourself. A request to reduce housing costs, a household change or health-related limitations may prompt an assessment. A keyword alone is not an explanation and does not guarantee approval.
If you need a company, explain the required scope rather than submitting only a total price. Packing yourself and booking carrying assistance is a different service from packing, transport and assembly together. Ask the Jobcenter which evidence it needs for your circumstances.
- Explain the reason in a few factual sentences with relevant records you already have.
- State the planned old and new addresses, possible dates and known acceptance deadlines for the property offer.
- Record the inventory and access at both homes: floors, lift, carrying distances and unusual items.
- Separate your own tasks from requested assistance; explain particular limitations to the responsible authority.
4. Plan the sequence before making binding commitments
Start early enough to allow for questions and quote validity. There is no reliable processing time covering every Jobcenter and case on which to base a booking. Tell the authority promptly if a landlord's or provider's deadline is approaching; silence is not approval.
| Stage | Prepare or check | What may still be unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Before signing the new tenancy | Submit the property offer showing basic rent, service and heating costs, floor area and move-in date | Assurance that the new accommodation costs will be recognised |
| Before selecting a moving quote | Ask about quotes, your own tasks, necessary assistance and evidence | Which specific moving costs will be assessed |
| Before a binding booking or deposit payment | Match the written decision and approved scope to the actual quote | Unapproved items, your contribution, payment route and date availability |
| When a material change occurs | Tell the authority and provider about changed scope, price or date | Whether an updated assurance or decision is needed |
| After the move | Keep and submit the invoice and any required evidence of work or payment | Settlement in accordance with the actual decision |
5. Obtain comparable quotes with a clear scope
A non-binding enquiry through Umzughilfen is not Jobcenter approval and does not reserve a moving date.
Ask your Jobcenter how many quotes it needs and in what form. Do not treat instructions from another district as a fixed rule for your case. Give every company the same inventory, route, access details, date assumptions and division of tasks.
A useful quote identifies the business that will contract for the work and makes the agreed scope clear. A low figure is not very informative if another provider already includes extra carrying distances, waiting time or assembly. Keep the submitted version and ask for changes to be explained in writing.
- Identify transport, carrying assistance, packing materials, packing and unpacking, and assembly separately.
- Check fixed price or hourly rate, included quantities and possible additional charges.
- Ask how long the quote remains valid and what is needed to secure a date.
- Tell the provider that a funding decision is outstanding; check which statement would already amount to a binding order.
6. Read the decision item by item
Do not stop at finding the word move in a letter. Match the document to the relevant application, quote and cost category. Clarify uncertainties before placing an order. The following is an editorial checklist, rather than an official form.
| Check | Establish from the letter or by asking | Compare with the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | New accommodation, transport, deposit or initial furnishings? | Does it actually cover the service now planned? |
| Scope and amount | Which items and what recognised amount? | Are optional services or extra costs still unresolved? |
| Quote and date | Which version, provider and conditions underpin the decision? | Do scope, validity and available date still match? |
| Payment route | Who receives payment, when and against which evidence? | Does the contracting provider accept the agreed arrangement? |
| Unresolved issues | Partial refusal, missing records or special conditions? | Who would bear unresolved costs before an order is placed? |
7. Report changes, special circumstances and time pressure early
Notify the Jobcenter of the move and relevant changes without delay using its confirmed contact routes. Keep a copy of what you submit and evidence of transmission. If responsibility changes to a new Jobcenter, also establish how further applications and contact arrangements will work; booking a move does not complete these steps.
Section 22(5) contains special conditions and exceptions for people under 25. Obtain an individual assessment before signing an accommodation contract. If you have already signed or incurred costs, explain the sequence promptly; later coverage cannot be promised or ruled out across the board by a blog article.
If a decision is negative or unclear, read its reasons and instructions on legal remedies. An enquiry does not replace a remedy submitted in the required form and time. Seek qualified help with the decision where needed, especially if a property offer will expire soon.
8. Base the booking on the scope you have clarified
Umzughilfen is a marketing and referral service based in Idstein for moving enquiries in the Rhine-Main area. We can refer your enquiry to a suitable independent partner. The quote, contract for performance, invoice and payment are directly with the business identified before you commit.
Umzughilfen does not decide benefit applications and does not guarantee funding or a particular payment arrangement with a partner. Agree the funding with the Jobcenter and the booking with the actual contracting business. We remain responsible for our own referral and data-protection obligations.
- Have you established the responsible authority for each application?
- Do you have the required assurances and decision on the specific planned costs?
- Does the still-valid quote match the recognised scope?
- Have you clarified your contribution, payment route and required evidence?
- Are the date and order confirmed as binding only after outstanding points are resolved?
Questions about the Jobcenter and moving
Must I always submit three quotes?
Ask your responsible Jobcenter about the number and format. Another municipality's instructions or a general comparison table do not establish the requirements for your case. Give all providers the same description of the work.
Does assurance about the new rent cover the moving company?
No. Recognition of the new accommodation and specific moving costs are separate questions. Check whether the decision also covers the proposed moving quote and its individual items.
Will the Jobcenter pay the partner directly?
Do not rely on automatic direct payment. Establish with the authority and contracting business who will receive payment, what records are needed and whether the provider accepts the arrangement.
Can I book once I have submitted the application?
Submission is not approval. A binding order before matters are clarified can create your own payment obligations. If time is short, ask promptly and check the required assurance and the actual booking conditions.
Are new furnishings automatically paid for with the move?
No. Necessary initial furnishings are a separate need under section 24(3) SGB II and must be assessed separately. Moving home does not automatically entitle you to new furnishings or replacement of existing furniture.
