Plan boxes around what you actually need to pack
How many moving boxes do I need? A practical estimate
The contents of your cupboards provide a better starting point than floor area alone. Use a few sample boxes, a room-by-room list and a separate count of boxes already available to narrow down the quantity you need.

1. Why a number per square metre is not enough
Two homes of the same size can need very different quantities of boxes. Books, dishes, toys, collections and full cellar shelves need packaging; empty floor space does not. The size of the boxes also changes the count.
Treat floor-area or household-size rules as rough starting points at most. For purchasing, focus on what will actually be packed. Sort belongings first and identify items travelling in suitcases, existing containers or special packaging. Furniture is not part of the moving-box count.
2. Use sample packing to estimate your own needs
Take a suitable box for each of three groups: heavy items, mixed belongings and light items. Pack a manageable section of a shelf or cupboard as it will travel, including protective material, a closed lid and a weight that can be handled under your moving conditions.
Record what fitted into which box. Suppose one small box held the contents of two similarly filled shelf compartments. Seven comparable compartments would suggest 7 ÷ 2 = 3.5, rounded up to four small boxes initially. This only transfers to compartments with comparable dimensions and contents.
Repeat for different kinds of belongings. A book sample does not establish the kitchen or clothing count. If you change box sizes, check the assumption again.
- Record the box type and dimensions so the remaining estimate uses the same size.
- Include protective material in the trial rather than adding it after the estimate.
- Estimate heavy and fragile contents separately.
- Mark unexamined cupboards as unresolved, rather than assigning them zero boxes.
3. Combine your estimates room by room
Worked example using assumed quantities. Your actual count may be very different.
Include all rooms and storage areas. Start with an estimate and replace it with actual counts as you pack. Boxes already packed form part of the requirement; do not add them a second time.
The following figures are hypothetical results of an imaginary inventory. They are not a recommendation for any floor area, number of people or household size.
| Area | Planned requirement | Check especially |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | 8 boxes | Dish protection and small appliances |
| Living room | 5 boxes | Books, ornaments and media |
| Bedroom | 7 boxes | Clothes and textiles |
| Children’s room | 4 boxes | Toys and books |
| Bathroom | 3 boxes | Closed containers and small items |
| Hallway | 2 boxes | Shoes and cupboard contents |
| Cellar | 5 boxes | Stored items actually coming with you |
| Recorded requirement | 34 boxes | Before spares |
4. Count small, regular and large boxes separately
An order for “40 boxes” is incomplete without sizes. Smaller boxes are often more practical for compact heavy belongings; larger ones suit light, bulky items. OBI also explains this distinction in its packing guide.
Follow the assembly instructions and load rating of the specific box. A printed rating is not a personal carrying target: a structurally adequate box can still be too heavy for the intended carrying route. Agree manageable packed weights with your helpers or partner.
List wardrobe boxes, picture packaging and other special formats separately. Do not automatically convert them into a number of ordinary boxes.
5. Separate spares from unexamined belongings
Spare boxes help with last-minute small items or boxes that become unusable. An unexamined cellar is an unresolved part of the inventory and should be counted separately. Do not hide major uncertainties in a standard allowance.
The example adds four spare boxes to the recorded 34: 34 + 4 = 38. Four is an assumption for this example, not a universal percentage rule. Whether more material must be obtained immediately also depends on timely resupply.
Keep spares flat and dry until needed. Check purchase or loan return conditions in advance; do not assume unused boxes can be returned free of charge.
6. Subtract available boxes by size
For each size, subtract suitable owned and borrowed boxes from the requirement. If the result is negative, the additional requirement for that size is zero.
Count your own boxes and confirmed loans by size. Check bases, folds, handles, moisture and odour. Damaged or unsuitable boxes are not available stock. A packed box belongs in both the requirement and the available-box count.
Here the total of 38, including spares, is split across three sizes. All twelve owned and six borrowed boxes are assumed suitable and available in time.
- Total check: 38 − 12 − 6 = 20 additional boxes.
- Surplus large boxes do not automatically replace missing small book boxes.
- If the partner supplies material, confirm its type, quantity, timing and price.
| Size | Needed incl. spares | Owned | Borrowed | Still to obtain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 10 | 4 | 2 | 4 |
| Regular | 20 | 5 | 4 | 11 |
| Large | 8 | 3 | 0 | 5 |
| Total | 38 | 12 | 6 | 20 |
7. Update the count while packing
After each completed room, record boxes packed, contents still to pack and suitable empty boxes remaining. This reveals optimistic sample estimates or spare stock early.
Identify a first-evening box and count it exactly once. Its packaging requirement depends on whether you use a cardboard box, bag or existing suitcase. Keep essential belongings accessible.
For vehicle planning, the partner also needs box dimensions, furniture and heavy individual items. The box count is neither your entire moving volume nor a promise that one trip will suffice.
8. Enquire about packing and materials through a partner
Provide quantities by size and explain whether you will pack yourself, only need materials or want a packing service. Boxes, protection, delivery, collection and any loan conditions should be distinguishable in the specific quote.
Umzughilfen provides marketing and referral services. Your enquiry is non-binding. Before a binding booking, the independent performing partner is identified by name and address; the quote, contract, work, invoice and payment are handled directly with them. Common questions about box quantities
How many boxes do I need for a 60 m² flat?
Floor area alone cannot give a reliable count. Inventory cupboard contents and storage areas, then try packing samples in the planned box sizes.
Should I only buy large boxes?
A mix is usually more practical. Heavy items need different formats from light textiles. Check the specific boxes and agree manageable packed weights.
Should I buy spare boxes on top of my list?
Choose an allowance that reflects remaining small items and resupply options. Include suitable boxes you already have first. Four spares in the example is not a general requirement.
How do I count boxes already packed?
Each packed box appears once in the total requirement and once in available stock. Do not add it again as a further requirement.
