Shared loads for a long-distance move: benefits and limits
With a shared load, your consignment travels in the same vehicle as other orders. This can suit a few furniture items or a separable part of your belongings when route, capacity and dates match. A clearly defined consignment and agreed conditions matter more than an apparently empty cubic metre.

1. Decide whether sharing a vehicle suits the move
Combining orders can reduce transport costs, but detours, access, carrying, packing and timing also affect the total. A shared load is not automatically cheaper than a dedicated trip.
First decide which belongings you can do without during the agreed period. A bed needed on the first night and everyday work equipment have different requirements from a spare shelf. A small move is not automatically suitable for a shared load.
| Situation | Implication | Confirm before booking |
|---|---|---|
| A few items and several possible days at both addresses | A useful starting point for an enquiry | Matching route, acceptance and confirmed windows |
| Handover and moving in on the same day | Little scheduling flexibility | Whether those dates can be expressly agreed |
| Part of the belongings can arrive later | Separate this consignment from immediate essentials | Which items travel and which stay |
| Fragile, heavy or unusual items | Special handling may be necessary | Suitability, packing and acceptance |
2. Agree collection and delivery separately
Base fixed handovers and follow-on work on a confirmed agreement. An enquiry or tentative route option does not reserve transport capacity.
Give the earliest and latest possible date at each address. Distinguish firm limits from preferences. “Sometime next week” is not a sufficient basis for handing over keys, taking leave or arranging a recipient.
Ask when a tentative window becomes a confirmed booking, how arrival is announced and how changes are agreed. Multiple stops do not imply a standard transit time: the offered tour must fit your actual limits.
- Collection: earliest start, latest clearance and usable loading hours.
- Delivery: first access to the property, latest acceptable arrival and recipient.
- Ask whether transfers or temporary storage are planned, by whom and on what terms.
- Agree an alternative if the offered tour cannot meet essential deadlines.
3. Make a separate list for this consignment
This sum is not a confirmed booking volume. Non-stackable items, protection and securing can require more space. The provider must assess the actual consignment.
Keep this shipment separate from the rest of the move. Agree an order identifier and consecutive package numbers with the provider. Colour can help sorting but does not replace an identifier that can be checked at collection and delivery.
Record item, quantity, packed dimensions, known weight and how it was established, plus special handling requirements. Mark unknown weights as requiring confirmation. Count separate packages after dismantling furniture.
Illustrative calculation only, not a customer case or quote: four packed boxes and one protected furniture item have the following assumed external dimensions.
| Packages | Assumed dimensions per item | Calculated volume |
|---|---|---|
| 4 boxes | 0.60 × 0.40 × 0.40 m | 4 × 0.096 = 0.384 m³ |
| 1 wrapped furniture item | 1.00 × 0.45 × 0.70 m | 0.315 m³ |
| 5 packages in total | Confirm weight and stackability separately | 0.699 m³, approximately 0.70 m³ |
4. Distinguish empty space from available payload
Section 34 StVZO requires compliance with permissible total mass and axle loads. Section 22 StVO requires securing against movement during hard braking and evasive manoeuvres. For planning, empty space therefore proves neither available payload nor safe accommodation.
Declare heavy individual items, delicate surfaces and stacking restrictions beforehand. The executing provider needs to assess the load, vehicle and compatibility with the other consignments. A general box count cannot replace this assessment.
5. Confirm acceptance conditions before packing
Shared load describes combined transport; it does not define every included service. Clarify who packs, labels, carries, dismantles, loads and reassembles. For a removal contract, the carrier duties under section 451a HGB also need to be considered; the service name does not replace that assessment.
Declare special items such as batteries, liquids or gas containers with an accurate description. Obtain specific confirmation of acceptance and preparation. A closed box or a gap in the vehicle says nothing about whether its contents can be accepted.
For delicate items, ask about protection and any transfers. A separate inventory does not imply a lockable private compartment. Agree requirements before assuming a particular form of handling is included.
6. Compare the full scope, not just the driving charge
Request quotes for the same inventory and access conditions. Compare a shared load with a dedicated trip where useful. Include all required tasks and timing constraints: a lower transport charge can be offset by other costs.
| Quote item | Record explicitly |
|---|---|
| Consignment | List version, package count, dimensions, weight and special items |
| Work at both addresses | Packing, dismantling, carrying, floors, lift, loading distance and assembly |
| Timing and journey | Collection and delivery windows, arrival notice, transfers and any storage |
| Price and changes | Total including applicable taxes, included services and how changes or waiting are handled |
| Contracting party and protection | Executing provider, contract terms, liability information and any agreed insurance |
7. Use the same list at collection and delivery
Check the packages actually handed over against the agreed inventory with the provider. Record visible condition and relevant details clearly. Where useful, photograph items and packaging without capturing unnecessary private documents or other customers’ shipments.
Extra boxes, larger packed dimensions or an inaccessible entrance change the planning assumptions. Report changes promptly and agree scope, timing and any additional costs. On delivery, check package identifiers and counts again; record discrepancies precisely and contact the contracting provider.
- Have the current list and agreed contacts available at both ends.
- Record what was collected and what expressly remained behind.
- Arrange a recipient and the agreed access.
- Document missing or damaged items; do not confirm completeness without checking.
8. Enquire through Umzughilfen
Umzughilfen is a marketing and referral service based in Idstein for enquiries in the Rhine-Main region. For a long-distance shipment, you can request selection of an independent partner. The provider confirms whether a suitable shared-load option exists after assessing your shipment and dates.
The quote, contract, work, invoice and payment are directly with the partner named in advance. Umzughilfen retains its own referral and data-protection obligations. An enquiry is not a promise of a vehicle, price or transport date.
Send origin and destination, separate collection and delivery windows, inventory, access and required tasks. State fixed limits and unresolved details explicitly so the partner can assess a shared tour or another transport solution.
Shared-load moving questions
Is a shared load always cheaper?
No. Compare the full scope for the same shipment, access, tasks and dates. There is no automatic percentage saving.
Can I request a fixed delivery day?
State any essential deadline in the enquiry. The provider must confirm whether it can be agreed; a flexible tour option is not a confirmed date.
Is a volume in cubic metres sufficient?
No. Package count, packed dimensions, weight information, special requirements and access also matter. Volume alone does not establish stackability, payload or securing.
Must I carry and pack everything myself?
That does not follow from the term shared load. Clarify the services and responsibilities with regard to applicable contract rules, and record the agreed work.
Will my items be transferred along the way?
That depends on the offered process. Ask about transfers, temporary storage and identification before booking. Sharing a vehicle does not by itself guarantee direct transport or a private compartment.
