Installation in your new home
Hanging pictures and curtains after moving: a plan
First decide where the furniture, pictures and curtains should go. The installer then needs dimensions, weights, details of the mounting surface and the specific hanging system. A short installation brief helps identify missing parts, unresolved fixings and possible extra appointments earlier.

1. Decide the arrangement before the appointment
Put the sofa, bed or sideboard in its final position where possible. View pictures from your usual positions and compare paper templates if helpful. For curtains, consider window opening, the intended fabric position and how the room is used.
Keep pictures protected until the location and appointment are settled. Photograph the front, back and existing hanging hardware where you can do so without damage. Discuss valuable or delicate originals with an appropriate specialist.
If you want to arrange several pictures as a gallery wall, use the Gartenbaupflege guide to picture sizes, spacing and layout. The guide is in German. Gartenbaupflege is a magazine within our project network.
2. Collect measurements and product details
Make a list for each room instead of a general request to hang everything. Number pictures and windows on the list and on a room sketch. State clearly which details are still unknown.
| Item or area | Details for the installer | Useful photograph |
|---|---|---|
| Picture or mirror | Outer dimensions, total weight and existing hanging hardware. | Front, back and intended location. |
| Curtain rod or track | Manufacturer, model, length, fabric and included components. | Complete set and instructions. |
| Window area | Intended position, window opening, sill and radiator. | Overall view showing the surroundings. |
| Wall or ceiling | Known construction, existing documents and unresolved questions. | Installation area and visible features. |
3. Have the surface and hidden services checked
fischer bases fixing selection on surface and load. Have suitability checked for the new installation location.
The Bosch UniversalDetect instructions describe limits to detecting electrical cables. No signal alone does not confirm a clear drilling point. Unresolved services or building components must be checked before work proceeds.
- Mark unknown wall construction as unknown in the enquiry.
- Make existing documents for the installation area available.
- Agree fixings and execution with the installer after assessment.
4. Check the curtain system and required parts
Check the model, mounting method and supplied parts. The IKEA VIDGA 204.929.16 example excludes wall fittings and screws; its product page links installation documents.
Agree the intended fabric position using the actual instructions and window layout. Include the window, handle, sill and radiator when discussing the result. Also agree whether the installer hangs and adjusts the fabric or installs only the rod or track.
5. Record materials, access and scope
Agree who checks existing parts and obtains anything missing. The material list must suit the confirmed installation. If an on-site assessment is needed to establish the surface, discuss whether another appointment will then be required.
Confirm permitted installation areas and property-specific restrictions with the person responsible for the rooms. Prepare access and working space; coordinate deliveries or other ongoing work with the installer.
| Point | Agree directly | Confirm before the visit |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | Who supplies brackets, fixings and additional parts? | Complete parts for the confirmed installation. |
| Work | Installation, hanging, adjustment and any removal of old parts. | Exact quantity and intended result. |
| Access | Address, arrival, working space and contact person. | An installation area that is actually available. |
| Price and changes | Materials, travel, on-site assessment and possible further visits. | What applies if parts are missing or scope changes. |
6. Identify the installer before commissioning
Ask for a quote based on the actual list and clarify which business will do the work. Transport, furniture assembly and wall installation are each agreed against the scope actually offered. A moving enquiry does not confirm an installation appointment.
For uncertain surfaces, delicate items or unusual systems, include the necessary assessment in the discussion. Changes to electrical connections are separate specialist work; they do not follow automatically from an enquiry about mechanical installation.

7. Review function and unfinished items together
Compare the completed arrangement with the agreed sketch. Ask the installer to explain use and relevant fixing guidance. Record any unfinished work with a responsible person and next step, and document the completed state.
For a child’s room, BAG Mehr Sicherheit für Kinder recommends keeping curtain and blind cords secured and out of reach. Review such requirements during planning and after any later change.
| Check | Review together | If something remains unfinished |
|---|---|---|
| Pictures | Agreed position and alignment. | Record the difference and next action. |
| Curtains | Opening, closing and intended fabric position. | Record an obstruction or missing adjustment. |
| Window use | Use within the agreed arrangement. | Discuss any necessary change with the installer. |
| Completion | Guidance, remaining materials and outstanding work. | Confirm responsibility and the next appointment. |
Questions about installing pictures and curtains
Can I reuse fixings from the old home?
Have them checked for the new surface and load.
How high should pictures and curtains hang?
Choose the arrangement around furniture position and room use. A curtain system also requires its instructions, mounting surface and necessary clearances to be considered; one fixed height will not suit every room.
What if parts are missing?
Agree who will obtain them and whether the affected work will wait. Confirm materials and the appointment before planning around completed installation.
Can everything be done in one visit?
That depends on the assessed surface, complete components, access and scope. Ask the installer whether an initial assessment and a later visit may be needed.
Is wall installation automatically included in a move?
Only work expressly offered and agreed belongs to the order. The identified partner confirms picture and curtain installation, materials, dates and billing directly with you.
