Moving lamps and light fittings: shades, bulbs and packing

One lamp on the inventory can become several packages: a base, a shade, bulbs and small fittings. Prepare this list before moving day, especially for glass pendants, large floor lamps and chandeliers. Agree removal and installation separately so an unpacked light fitting does not leave you without usable lighting on the first evening.

1. Record the whole fitting and its separate parts

Give each lamp an ID and photograph it while complete. Record the model, destination room and existing cracks, loose parts or bent shade frames. Distinguish plug-in table or floor lamps from fixed ceiling and wall fittings. Note heavy bases, long arms, multiple glass pieces and special finishes before choosing packaging.

Measure height, width and projecting parts. For a large shade, record its widest diameter and height; for a floor lamp, note whether its stem separates according to the instructions. Finished package dimensions matter for vehicle space and the carrying route. A catalogue measurement is not automatically the packed size.

2. Agree removal before the packing appointment

For fixed fittings, arrange electrical disconnection and reconnection with a qualified electrician. DSH recommends leaving the electrical connection to a specialist. Agree who handles removal from the ceiling, access equipment and the remaining lighting at the old address; transport alone does not describe these tasks.

For a portable lamp, unplug it and let it cool before preparation. Find the model instructions before removing shades, bulbs or stem sections. IKEA provides downloadable instructions through its product pages; use the relevant manufacturer for other models. Do not force glued or unclear connections apart, and do not open sealed LED modules for packing.

Set the removal time early enough for inspection and packing before loading. If a fitting will remain in the old property, put that decision on the inventory. For a chandelier or an unusual installation, request an individual assessment rather than assuming routine removal is included.

3. Give shades and glass their own protection

A fabric shade needs space that preserves its shape. Do not fill it with books, fittings or the heavy lamp base, and do not press several shades together unless their construction and packing allow it. Keep clean protective materials away from dirty tools and loose metal parts.

For glass parts, the general packing principle is to separate, cushion and immobilise them inside a suitable rigid outer box. DHL describes this for parcels; it does not determine a moving provider’s contractual packing duties. Choose the actual materials and support with the person responsible for packing.

Do not fasten adhesive tape directly to glass decoration, fabric or a coated finish. For crystal drops, delicate arms, antique glass or a large one-piece shade, agree an individual packing plan before removal. A “fragile” label does not make an unsuitable box adequate.

4. Prepare bases, cables and bulbs by model

Protect the base and body against contact with other hard items. Keep the cable loosely gathered and protected from trapping; do not use it as a carrying handle. Put removable bulbs in suitable separate compartments or their retained protective packaging. Mark the model association without covering useful product information.

Keep screws, shade rings, remotes and external power supplies together in a labelled accessory container. Photograph the contents before closing it. Only dismantle structural connections when the model permits it; a long floor lamp may need a long protected package rather than a shorter improvised bundle.

5. Count the packages actually handed over

In this hypothetical example, two light fittings become five packages. L01 is a table lamp with its base and fabric shade packed separately. L02 is a pendant body with glass parts in another box. One shared accessory box L-Z contains separately protected, labelled bulbs and fittings for both IDs. Five packages are an example, not a standard requirement.

Write the destination room, item ID and handling instructions on the outer packaging. Record package dimensions and the actual handover count after packing. If you take the accessory box yourself, the provider receives four packages in this example; put the separate transport responsibility on the list.

6. Plan usable lighting for the first evening

Keep a suitable working portable light accessible for arrival rather than depending on a ceiling fitting awaiting installation. Agree where the lamp packages will be placed so they stay out of carrying routes. Open fragile-part boxes in a clear area and compare their contents with the inventory.

Check visible condition before use. Have damaged cables, loose electrical components or an uncertain fitting assessed before energising it. Confirm the new fitting location and required mounting work with the installer. Restoring smart-light settings, pairing controls and supplying missing parts should be separately assigned if needed.

7. Separate packing, transport and installation in the quote

A quote should show which work is actually included. Describe the number and type of fittings, not just “lamps”. Confirm the responsible provider, materials, preparation deadline and any individually agreed packing. Clarify extra work before moving day so neither access equipment nor installation is assumed to be part of loading.

8. Send a clear enquiry for Idstein and Rhein-Main

Umzughilfen is a marketing and referral service based in Idstein for moving enquiries in Rhein-Main. Describe the light fittings, access at both addresses and required work. The enquiry form has no file upload; agree how to send photos with the named contact.

The independent partner is named before commissioning, quotes for the work, enters into the execution contract, performs it, invoices and receives payment. Umzughilfen retains its own referral and data-protection responsibilities. Sending an enquiry is not a booking; packing and any installation must be confirmed in the agreed scope.

Questions about moving lamps and light fittings

Do all lamps need to be dismantled?

No. Check the model instructions and the agreed packing plan. Remove only parts intended for removal; fixed or unclear connections need assessment before work begins.

Can the lamp base travel inside the shade?

Do not use a delicate shade as a container for heavy parts. Plan protection that preserves its shape and keeps hard components separate.

Is electrical disconnection included in a moving quote?

Do not assume it is. Agree electrical work with a qualified electrician and record the responsible provider, timing and price separately from packing and transport.

How many packages should I list?

List the finished packages actually handed over. The five-package example covers two fittings; if the owner carries the accessory box, four packages go to the provider.

How can I send photos with the enquiry?

The form has no upload field. Describe the fittings in text and agree a suitable way to send photos with the named contact.
