Moving a mattress and bed: packing and the first night

A delivered mattress does not by itself mean a usable bed will be ready that evening. Several things must come together: the mattress fits the route, bed parts arrive with their fittings, assembly is agreed and bedding is accessible. Start with model details and measurements, then plan packing and the work in the new bedroom.

1. Record the model and each part of the bed

Photograph mattress and bed labels, the overall setup and any visible damage. Distinguish the mattress, removable topper, base and frame; they may travel separately. Identify drawers, lifting mechanisms or electric adjustment in advance. These features require a separate discussion about preparation.

Record the actual dimensions of each large element. The sleeping surface is not the same size as the outside of the bed: a headboard, legs or upholstery can extend beyond it. Use documented weights where available. Leave an unknown weight as a question for the mover instead of inventing an estimate. Once packed, update the measurements of the finished packages.

2. Check the route at both addresses

Measure doorways, stair turns and the entrance to the bedroom. If using a lift, record its doorway as well as the cabin dimensions. Show the mover the tightest sections for a rigid base or a wide headboard. The width of one doorway does not establish that the item can turn immediately beyond it.

Compare the route with the packed dimensions and the permitted handling method. Do not base the plan on being able to bend the mattress around a stairwell. Resolve uncertain access before the team sets off. In the new bedroom, decide where the bed will stand and keep sufficient working space for assembly.

3. Choose protection using the mattress instructions

Factory delivery in a roll does not authorise rolling or compressing the mattress again at home. For example, TEMPUR’s German guidance prohibits changing its products’ original shape unless otherwise specified. Find the rules for your exact model and ask the manufacturer where unclear. Permission concerning a topper should not be transferred to a full mattress.

Select a clean transport cover of the correct size and check how it closes. Make sure the mattress and protection are dry before packing. Plan protection for the short journey between the building and the vehicle, especially in rain. Do not attach adhesive tape directly to the upholstery or place fittings and other hard parts inside the cover with the mattress.

Agree vehicle positioning, supports and restraint with the carrier in line with the product instructions. Fabric handles are not proof that they are intended to carry the full weight. If storage is needed before use, confirm the permitted conditions and position separately. Packaging for the journey does not automatically answer the storage question.

4. Connect fittings and components to the correct bed

Find the instructions before dismantling and give them to whoever will do the work. IKEA instructions can be found through the product page using the product name or article number. For other manufacturers, check their documentation and support. Save the file so it can be opened offline at the new address.

Agree how much dismantling is required. Photos of connections and component labels help match parts during assembly, but do not replace the instructions. Put each bed’s fittings in closed, labelled packaging and record who will transport them. Note missing parts or damaged connections before loading rather than relying on finding an improvised replacement that evening.

5. Confirm what the transport job includes

List the mattress, base, prepared components and fittings package separately. The number of loose parts before packing may differ from the number of packages handed over. Where several components form one package, identify its actual contents. Report changes after dismantling so the scope is not left at an earlier estimate.

Agree protection for long components, carrying, vehicle placement and delivery to the assembly area. Do not treat the mattress as padding for heavy furniture. If a usable bed is needed that evening, say so in advance. Loading order and access to components need to fit the carrier’s actual plan, rather than depend solely on an “open first” label.

6. Prepare the bedroom for assembly

Keep the working area clear and remove boxes from the bed’s intended position. Check that necessary floor work is complete and that furniture may be placed according to the requirements of the materials used. Arrange the receiving area so components do not immediately need to be carried across the apartment again.

Check completeness and condition after delivery. Assemble the bed according to the correct model instructions; before use, check the specified connections, supports and base position. If an essential part is missing, damage is present or stability is uncertain, do not treat the bed as ready. Record the issue and agree a remedy with the person responsible for assembly.

7. Plan the first night separately from unloading

Keep sheets, pillows and evening essentials in their own accessible packaging. Identify who will bring this kit. Do not bury it in a box travelling to another address or into storage first. Where several bedrooms are involved, label each bedding set so the right size is easy to find after assembly.

If assembly or access to the property could be delayed, arrange a suitable alternative place to sleep in advance. Do not rely on a partly assembled frame. After transport, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparing the mattress for use; there is no universal waiting period for every model. Plan the first night around confirmed readiness rather than the vehicle’s arrival time.

8. Give the partner a specific brief

Umzughilfen is a marketing and referral service based in Idstein for moving enquiries in the Rhein-Main region. Provide models, dimensions, floors, access, required dismantling and assembly, and your plans for the first night. Send photographs by a method agreed with the named contact; the enquiry form has no file upload.

The independent partner named in advance confirms feasibility and scope, supplies the quote, enters into the contract for the work with you, performs the work, invoices you and receives payment. Clarify whether packing materials and assembly at the new address are included. Umzughilfen retains its own referral and data-protection obligations. An enquiry is not yet a booking.

Questions about moving a mattress and bed

Can I roll a mattress again if it originally arrived rolled?

Do not treat factory packaging as permission to roll it again. Check your exact model instructions and ask the manufacturer about transport if necessary.

Is the sleeping-surface size enough information?

No. Provide the mattress size, outside frame and headboard dimensions and other large components. Once packed, include the finished package dimensions.

Where should screws and other small parts go?

In closed packaging labelled for the specific bed. Add it to the inventory and name the person responsible for handing it over.

Is bed assembly automatically included in a move?

Agree it separately with the named provider. Confirm the work, materials, room readiness and checks after assembly.

What if the bed is not ready by the evening?

Use the suitable alternative sleeping arrangement planned in advance. Do not use a partly assembled or unstable structure.
