Moving a sofa: measurements, modules and preparation

A sofa may fit the new living room yet fail to turn on the staircase. Before moving, connect three things: model construction, prepared module dimensions and the carrying route. List cushions, removable parts and assembly separately. One sofa on the furniture inventory does not always mean one package at loading.

1. Record the model and module arrangement

Find the model name and save an overall photo plus pictures of upholstery, feet and visible connections. Identify a corner section, bed mechanism, storage compartment, electric functions or a non-standard modification. These features matter for preparation. A modular appearance does not establish that the sofa can be separated in any chosen way.

Show the long section in a photograph and on the new room plan. “Left-hand corner” can be ambiguous without a viewing direction. For example, label the plan “looking at the sofa from the front” and identify parts A and B. Measure outside dimensions, including protruding arms and backrest; seat dimensions alone are insufficient for transport.

2. Check the route using finished dimensions

Check doors, stair turns, landings, lift access and the route from the vehicle at both addresses. Use protected module dimensions rather than just catalogue sofa dimensions. Door width alone is not enough: there may be insufficient space beyond it for turning and the people carrying the item.

If the plan depends on removing feet or another component, first confirm that the model allows it. Do not rely on forcing the frame or upholstery through a narrow opening. Send uncertain measurements and photos to the provider before moving day. If the route is unconfirmed, agree another solution before dismantling.

3. Agree dismantling using the model instructions

Find the instructions before work begins and give them to the person handling dismantling and assembly. IKEA provides instructions through the product page using the name or article number. For another manufacturer, use its documentation and support. Save the file for offline access at the new address.

Clarify which connections and components may be dismantled and who is responsible. Do not assume that feet, arms, backrests or covers are removable from their appearance alone. For sofa beds or motorised models, separately agree mechanism position and preparation according to the instructions. Do not force an unclear connection apart.

Mark removed parts and fittings before they become mixed with other belongings. Keep connection photographs and records of missing elements or damaged fixings. These photos help match components but do not replace the manual. Repairing connections should not be treated as routine assembly after transport.

4. Protect upholstery and identify support points

Check surface condition and dryness before packing. Choose materials compatible with the upholstery and finish, protecting protruding corners and feet. Do not attach tape directly to fabric, leather or decorative surfaces. Pack removable cushions and small hard components so they cannot damage each other.

The linked Stressless manual specifies lifting beneath the main structure. Check your own sofa instructions for permitted grip points. Agree carrying, the necessary number of helpers and vehicle orientation with the provider. An armrest or decorative component should not automatically be treated as a handle.

Check that protection does not constrict soft parts excessively or obstruct the intended handling. Tell the carrier where mechanisms and vulnerable areas are located. If packing takes place at the property, include work and materials in the scope. The word “sofa” in an enquiry does not describe protection for each module.

5. Count packages separately from the furniture set

In this example sofa S01 is handed over as four separate packages: main module S01-A, long section S01-B, parts box S01-K and cushion package S01-P. This is an inventory example for packing chosen in advance. Another model will have a different composition and count; four packages are not a standard allowance.

Put the destination room and connection to S01 on every package. Keep actual contents and large-package dimensions in the inventory. If fittings or cushions travel with the owner, note that separately on the carrier’s list. Update handed-over counts after packing changes and identify who checks completeness.

6. Prepare space for assembly and use

Before unloading, decide module positions and keep assembly space clear. Check routes, door opening and room needed for a sofa-bed extension. A sofa fitting the room when closed may need additional space in use. Conditions for placement on the new flooring also need consideration.

After delivery, match all packages and check visible condition. Assemble and check connections, feet and mechanisms according to the model instructions. Do not treat the sofa as ready if fittings are missing, damage exists or stability is uncertain. Record the open issue and agree a solution with the person responsible for assembly.

If the sofa is needed as a bed on the first night, say so in advance and arrange an alternative for delays. A partly assembled structure does not replace a usable bed. Unloading and assembly order must reflect the actual work plan, not just the preferred arrival time.

7. Separate preparation, transport and assembly

Clarify whether packing, materials, removal of permitted components, carrying at both addresses and assembly are included. The quote should identify responsibility for each stage and the condition in which the item is handed over. If measurements change dismantling requirements, update the agreement before work begins.

Upholstery cleaning, mechanism repairs and replacing damaged connections are separate tasks where required. Do not assume they are included in transport. For storage between addresses, agree packaging, conditions and redelivery separately. Provide one current inventory rather than several conflicting descriptions.

8. Give the partner specific sofa information

Umzughilfen is a marketing and referral service based in Idstein for moving enquiries in the Rhein-Main region. Include the model, outside dimensions, prepared modules, floors, access and required work. Send photographs by a method agreed with your named contact; the enquiry form has no file upload.

The independent partner named in advance confirms feasibility and scope, supplies the quote, enters into the contract for the work with you, performs the work, invoices you and receives payment. Umzughilfen retains its own referral and data-protection obligations. An enquiry is not yet a booking.

Questions about moving a sofa

Can the feet or arms be removed from any sofa?

No. Check the particular model documentation and agree permitted dismantling with the provider. A connection’s appearance is not permission to dismantle it.

Which measurements does the carrier need?

Outside sofa dimensions and actual protected module dimensions. Seat dimensions or the width of one door do not describe the whole route.

How can I describe a left- or right-hand corner clearly?

Provide a photo and sketch with labelled components and viewing direction, such as looking at the sofa from the front. “Left” alone may be ambiguous.

Are cushions and fittings one package with the sofa?

Only if that is how they are actually packed and handed over. List separate packages individually and link their IDs to the sofa.

Is assembly after delivery automatically included?

Confirm it with the named partner. Clarify scope and checks after assembly; repairs or cleaning require separate agreement.
